Gov. Nathan Deal will deliver the State of the State address on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. in the House chamber. Georgia Public Broadcasting plans to air the address live statewide and also stream it on the GPB web site.

Justice approves Georgia’s redistricting plans

The U.S. Department of Justice has approved the congressional and legislative maps passed into law this summer by the state of Georgia, the state’s elected leaders learned today. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, Georgia must receive approval from the federal government before any changes in election practices or procedures are implemented.

Sales tax revenue climbing in Troup County

TROUP COUNTY, GA - Sales taxes collections for Troup County rose 9.7% for the fiscal-year-to-date, according to the county’s CFO, Stewart Mills.  The County’s fiscal year starts in July, so the increase is for sales taxes received for July through October. 

“The sales show an improving trend for the year,” Mills continued, “only one month this year has been below $400,000, and that was back in February.”  We’ve seen the best monthly averages in three years.  The sales revenues for 2011 year-to-date are up 4.4%, which indicates the trend is on the rise.

Troup County Redraws Commissioner Districts

TROUP COUNTY, GA - Since the 2000 census population survey was conducted, the Troup County’s population has increased from 58,779 to 67,044, a 14% increase. This increase also saw a shift in populations among the commissioners’ districts. Redistricting happens at every level of government every ten years following the nationwide Census. According to Brian Knight with Georgia’s Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office, each County Commissioner district is required to be within one percent of population from one another.
