Area Geographic Information Systems professionals gather at CSU Friday

COLUMBUS, GA - Columbus State University’s Geography Department along with co-hosts Troup County and City of Auburn GIS offices is hosting a morning roundtable and afternoon Census workshop for GIS professionals from around the region. Spots in the workshop filled up in less than 48 hours.

GIS, short for Geographic Information Systems, is a relatively recent discipline used in both the public and private sectors. (If you use a GPS or read a map, it came from GIS). Governments use GIS to support 911, crime analysis, property assessment, transportation and land planning and economic development, to name a few. In the private sector, GIS is most often used in logistics, marketing, decision support analysis and more.  The capabilities of GIS have exploded in recent years and few colleges have taken it on as an area of study for colleges and universities.
