WEST POINT, GA - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced today that Ringer Park, located off US Highway 27 north of LaGrange, will be managed for day use only, effective on January 1, 2012.
Camping will no longer be permitted in the park, other activities such as picnicking, fishing, boat launching and hiking will remain available to the public.
The Corps’ maintenance contractor, Anderson Construction Company, will remove the park’s tent pads, reposition picnic tables as needed, and implement other improvements to make the area more suitable to picnicking and other day use activities. Portions of the park will be closed to public access while this work is taking place.
The park’s boat launching ramp and parking area will remain open during this transition and throughout the year.
“We consider this to be an efficiency improvement”, said West Point Project Operations Manager Steve Logan. “It will help reduce our operating costs, and it will not result in the closure of the park. Our goal is to provide the public with a cleaner, safer and more efficiently operated park, with continued access to the upper reaches of West Point Lake,” said Logan.
At West Point Lake, the Corps operates four “Class A” campgrounds with utility hook-ups and full amenities. These areas open for the recreation season in February and March. Several other campgrounds on the lake, operated by others, remain open year-round. A list of all West Point Lake campgrounds is provided below.
